GOP Group Meddles in Dem Primary

Ending Spending is running ads to boost Brent Welder.

Aug. 6, 2018, 10:15 a.m.

Ending Spending, a PAC largely funded by conservative donor Joe Ricketts, is playing in the Democratic primary for Rep. Kevin Yoder’s (R) seat, dropping a TV ad likely meant to boost the Bernie Sanders-aligned attorney Brent Welder (D). The 30-second spot links Welder to Sanders and President Obama and blasts him as “too progressive for Kansas.”

“'Meet progressive Brent Welder, community organizer, friend to Barack Obama and ally of Bernie Sanders. Welder wants to bring Obama-Sanders progressivism to Kansas,’ a cheery female narrator says at the beginning of the 30-second ad. ‘He’d raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, wipe out tax breaks for big corporations, make college completely free. And he supports single-payer Medicare for All.’” (Huffington Post) Ending Spending reported spending $185,000 on a media buy. (FEC)

FRESH POLLING. Welder led a Public Policy Polling survey with 35 percent of the vote, compared to attorney Sharice Davids’s (D) 21 percent and teacher Tom Niermann’s (D) 15 percent. The poll (Aug. 2-3; 543 LVs; +/- 4.2%) was commissioned by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which backed Welder. (release)

ON BOARD. The Kansas City Star endorsed Davids, noting her background as a “Native American, lesbian and a former mixed martial arts fighter” will “bring a unique array of life experiences to Congress, which desperately needs different voices and world views.” (Kansas City Star)

BREAKING DOWN THE FIELD. Niermann’s “positions are similar to Welder's, but Niermann says that while he supports Medicare for all conceptually and as a long-term solution, he favors bipartisan efforts to reduce health care costs in the short term and with a divided Washington. Niermann is touting his lengthy ties to the area, including local officials' endorsements.” Niermann “highlighting his local ties is an implicit contrast with Welder, who moved to Kansas from St. Louis last year.” (CNN)
