Ocasio-Cortez Staffers Helping Carper's Democratic Challenger

The Working Families Party is also running SCOTUS-themed digital ads against the incumbent senator.

NY-14 nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D) “this week decided to send at least three paid campaign staffers to Delaware to help Kerri Evelyn Harris, an Air Force veteran and community activist who is challenging three-term" Sen. Tom Carper (D) “in a Sept. 6 primary. … Another New York-based staffer will help with Harris's digital outreach.”

“The spokesmen acknowledged that the move is partly a thank-you to Harris and five members of her campaign team who traveled to New York to campaign for Ocasio-Cortez in the closing days of her primary against Crowley.”

“Harris, a political novice based in Dover, Delaware, began her campaign in February, seeking to run to the senator's left. She is only the second Democrat to challenge Carper since he joined the U.S. Senate in 2000. There is no reliable polling to gauge Harris' viability in Delaware, where just a few thousand Democrats voted when Carper faced a primary challenge in 2012. If she wins, Harris would be Delaware's first biracial lesbian woman to serve in Congress -- and the first-ever to serve in the U.S. Senate.” (CBS News)

The Working Families Party endorsed Harris and is running Facebook ads attacking Carper for voting to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh in 2006 and Chief Justice John Roberts in 2005. (HuffPost)

"Carper is the only sitting Democratic senator who voted in favor of ... Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, to be a U.S. Circuit judge in 2006." But Carper said this week "Kavanaugh has revealed his 'true colors' during his 12 years on the bench and has amassed a record that’s a 'profound disappointment.'” (USA Today)

WHY WE CARE

"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the Senate will take up criminal justice reform legislation as soon as this week, marking a win for President Donald Trump and a remarkable turnaround for the bill. The latest version of the measure could be released as soon as Tuesday, according to two sources familiar with the matter, and is likely to win over more Republican support on a plan that had sharply divided the GOP."

"The conservative writer and conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi filed a lawsuit on Sunday accusing special counsel Robert Mueller of blackmailing him to lie about President Donald Trump in the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. The suit, which seeks $350 million in actual and punitive damages in U.S. District Court in Washington, was filed six days after Corsi entered a formal complaint with the Justice Department alleging prosecutorial misconduct by Mueller." Corsi alleges that Mueller illegally leaked information from the grand jury, and that Mueller's team "threatened him with prison unless he agreed to testify falsely that he served as a liaison between WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and the Republican political strategist Roger Stone."
