Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Andrew Zelt (R) has ended his campaign to unseat Rep. Duncan Hunter (R), who is the subject of an FBI investigation. “Zelt struggled to raise money as a first-time-candidate but used creative gimmicks like a satirical online crowdsourcing effort and a dunk tank at a community event (‘Dunk Hunter!’). Zelt said he’s endorsing another Republican who recently entered the race,” El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells (R).

Zelt: “I am 100 percent committed to my decision to leave the race and endorse Bill Wells for Congress. I know Bill will make a great representative and I fully believe he will win. My hope is to see other Republicans get behind Bill’s strong candidacy.”

Also running in the Republican primary is businessman Shamus Sayed (R) and former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio (R), “who has received nomination papers but has not officially announced a campaign.” (San Diego Union-Tribune)
