Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) leading the all-party primary with 23 and 21 percent respectively, according to a poll from the Public Policy Institute of California (Jan. 21-30; 1,705 adults; +/- 3.2%). All other candidates trailed in the single digits.

“Newsom shouldn’t be called the front-runner anymore. … Villaraigosa has essentially caught up. … Latinos are flocking to Villaraigosa, the poll shows. And this could be the year that Latinos actually vote in powerful numbers, inspired by their disdain of President Trump’s rants about illegal immigration.” (Los Angeles Times)

“An internal poll (800 LVs) conducted by David Binder Research for [Lt. Gov. Gavin] Newsom’s (D) campaign, released … Wednesday, found … Newsom at 30 percent” and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) and state Treasurer John Chiang (D) at 11 percent each. Republicans trailed in the single digits. (San Jose Mercury News)

“Ruby Rippey Gibney, the former aide to … Newsom whose more than decade-old affair is resurfacing as part of the gubernatorial race, wrote Wednesday that her former boss should be absolved from recurring accusations of workplace harassment.” (Sacramento Bee)

The Association of California State Supervisors endorsed Chiang on Wednesday. (release)

GA GOV: State Rep. Stacey Evans (D) “reported Wednesday collecting nearly $2.3 million since she jumped in the race, including $800,000 over the last seven months. … Evans closed the gap with a $1 million loan and another $250,000 check. … Evans reported she had about $1.5 million cash on hand at the end of January, and nearly all of it was available to spend in the May primary.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) Over 90% of the funds raised by the Evans campaign are from Georgia donors, and nearly 6,000 people have contributed to date.” (release)

State Sen. Michael Williams (R) raised $728,000 “and has over $1.3 million cash on hand. The overall average donation was just $77 with the average small dollar donation ($200 or less) being $34. Team Williams received more donations than any other Republican rival and maintained the lowest average contribution amount of any candidate.” (release)

Former Navy SEAL Clay Tippins (R) reported about $1.7 million on hand with the help of a $450,000 loan. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

NY GOV: Larry Sharpe (L) last week “resigned from his position as an alternate representative for region 8 on the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) after that committee failed to suspend its vice-chair, Arvin Vohra.” (Reason)

SD GOV: Former state Rep. Lora Hubbel (R) picked Bruce Whalen as her running mate. (Mitchell Daily Republic)
