Community activist Kerri Harris (D) announced her intention to challenge Sen. Tom Carper (D). The Air Force veteran would become the first biracial lesbian to serve in Congress if she were to win.

Harris "plans to officially kick off her campaign" Saturday morning "in downtown Wilmington."

"While Harris' agenda firmly aligns with that of progressive Democrats, she refuses to characterize her upcoming battle as one of progressive versus moderate ideology. Rather, the state Human Relations commissioner who has lobbied Carper's office on a range of issues, criticized him as a disconnected career politician who continues to vote against Delaware residents' best interests to the benefit of corporate donors." The senator is seeking his fourth term. He won a 2012 primary challenge with 88 percent of the vote.
