Gowdy Announces Retirement

There are several potential GOP candidates eyeing his seat.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R) announced Wednesday he would retire in 2018 to return to the justice system. “A person familiar with the lawmaker’s plans said that Mr. Gowdy had turned down an offer by the Trump administration to nominate him for a judgeship on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and that he planned to enter private practice in South Carolina instead.” (New York Times)

Candidates interested in seeking his safe, Republican seat include state Sen. William Timmons (R), state Rep. Dan Hamilton (R), Spartanburg County GOP Chairman Josh Kimbrell, and former Rep. Bob Inglis (R). (Greenville News)

The district, based in the Greenville/Spartanburg area backed President Trump by 26 points in 2016.
