Republican Bob Flanders, a Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice who launched Thursday a longshot challenge to Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers after playing college ball at Brown, WPRI noted. He was picked in the 23rd round of the 1971 amateur draft and batted .231 over parts of three minor league seasons, according to Baseball Reference.
