President Trump endorsed former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie (R) Thursday: “Ralph Northam, who is running for Governor of Virginia,is fighting for the violent MS-13 killer gangs & sanctuary cities. Vote Ed Gillespie!” (Twitter)
MONEY EARNED … Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) campaign announced Thursday that it raised $6.4 million in September and reported $5.7 million as of Sept. 30.
“Between Northam for Governor and Stronger Together PAC, Northam has a vast grassroots network with more than 79,909 contributions, with more than 88% of those contributions being $100 or less.” (release)
ALARM BELLS. “[N]one of the enthusiasm that bubbled around” 2107 GA-06 nominee Jon Ossoff’s (D) “long-shot bid is apparent around Northam. With just a month to go before the vote, Democratic operatives working on the race and those closely following it are more openly panicked that complacency has set in. … Privately, Democratic operatives in and around the state say Northam isn’t blameless for the lack of enthusiasm. The Lt. Governor has a folksy, small-town doctor approach to campaigning that has worked well for other Democrats who run statewide in the past but seems out of place for the age of Donald Trump and doesn’t exactly elicit passionate devotion.”
“Northam’s internal campaign polling has the race within the margin of error, and not at the outer edges of that range.”
“Just eight percent of donations to his campaign have originated from outside of the state or nearby Washington D.C. … Of the $12.6 million he had raised through the end of August, a mere $478,000 had come from people giving $100 or less.”
“Northam also hasn’t engaged the online progressive community as much as some Virginia Democrats had hoped, having chosen to forgo speaking (even by telecast) to the Netroots Nation audience this year. But in fairness to Northam, numerous Virginia Democrats noted, not everyone has engaged him back. … Diane May, a spokesperson for Our Revolution, [said] they had not endorsed Northam because a request to do so had not been made” by the local chapters.” (Daily Beast)
POST TRAUMATIC. “The political arm of the Northern Virginia Technology Council declined to endorse in the governor’s race, after supporting the Republican nominee in every gubernatorial contest since it was formed in 2002. … [T]he council said it was content with either gubernatorial candidate.” (Washington Post)
The Washington Post editorial slammed Gillespie for “hogwash” ads blaming Northam for MS-13’s presence in Virginia. “GILLESPIE … wants voters in the commonwealth to be very afraid.” (Washington Post) Conservative Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin and the New Republic simiarly highlighted the ads to show Gillespie’s targeting of the base.
