State Rep. Yvette Herrell (R) is the first Republican to enter the race for Rep. Steve Pearce’s (R) open seat. “Herrell has won a reputation as one of the more conservative members of the state House of Representatives since she won her seat in 2010. She has sponsored legislation to ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and backed calling a national convention to amend the U.S. Constitution with restrictions on government spending as well as term limits for members of Congress.” (Santa Fe New Mexican)

POSSIBLE FIELD. “Those close to” state Sen. Joe Cervantes (D) say he will not drop his bid for governor to run for Pearce’s seat. “There are four candidates running but none of them are seen by veteran observers as top tier.” However, state Sen. Howie Morales (D) or former state Rep. Jose Campos (D) could run. Campos “has talked about running for the seat if someday it became open.” (Joe Monahan)
