Team Northam Slams Perriello on “Dismissing” Transvaginal Ultrasound Fight

A labor union will make “an announcement” with the Democrat today.

April 20, 2017, 11:28 a.m.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) campaign amped up its attacks on former Rep. Tom Perriello (D) on Thursday, hosting a phone call with reporters in which NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia Executive Director Tarina Keene said it “truly floored me” that Perriello “dismissed” Northam’s opposition to transvaginal ultrasounds. Perriello this month told a town hall in southwest Virginia, “Why are you going to throw a parade for that?” in response to a question about Northam’s role in reproductive rights.

Keene: “I am appalled at his lack of understanding of the importance that fight has had on reproductive health and rights access in Virginia.”

State Sen. Barbara Favola (D), citing Perriello’s votes in Congress against taxpayer-funded abortions: “I don’t believe that Tom Perriello cares about this issue, is going to advocate for women’s rights or abortion rights. … No matter what he says now, it’s hard for me to believe he is going to take this issue as seriously as Dr. Northam will take it.”

Keene also praised Northam’s longstanding career in state politics.

Keene: “I’ve never seen Tom Perriello in Richmond, and I wouldn’t have recognized him if he walked in the room until about three months ago.” (Hotline reporting)

COMING UP NEXT. Northam on Wednesday “called for a new law to require dark money groups, regardless of their tax status, to disclose their contributors if they spend money to influence Virginia’s elections.” (release)

“LiUNA (Laborers’ International Union of North America) will make an announcement with” Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) on Thursday at 3 p.m. (release)

"The Trump administration on Tuesday said it has called back tens of thousands of federal workers to fulfill key government tasks, including disbursing tax refunds, overseeing flight safety and inspecting the nation’s food and drug supply, as it seeks to blunt the impact of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. The nearly 50,000 furloughed federal employees are being brought back to work without pay — part of a group of about 800,000 federal workers who are not receiving paychecks during the shutdown."

"The House voted overwhelmingly to rebuke GOP Rep. Steve King for making racist comments in a recent interview. The rare resolution of disapproval, which included a broad denunciation of white supremacist and white nationalist movements, was passed on a 424-1 vote. But some House Democrats argue the move doesn't go far enough and are pushing censure motions against the Iowa Republican."
