Brownback Challenger Considering Run for Jenkins Seat

2014 gubernat­ori­al nom­in­ee Paul Dav­is (D) said Thursday he’s con­sid­er­ing a bid for the seat Rep. Lynn Jen­kins (R) will va­cate in 2018. Dav­is, a former state rep­res­ent­at­ive who nar­rowly lost to Gov. Sam Brown­back (R) two years ago, “said he was en­cour­aged by the res­ults Tues­day of” the KS-04 spe­cial elec­tion where civil rights at­tor­ney James Thompson (D) … lost to Rep.-elect Ron Estes (R).

“Two Re­pub­lic­ans, in­clud­ing state Sen. Steve Fitzger­ald … and Ver­non James Fields … along with one Demo­crat, Kelly Don Stand­ley … have already of­fi­cially filed for the race.” (Lawrence Journ­al-World)

“The 2nd Dis­trict in east­ern Kan­sas is not over­whelm­ingly Re­pub­lic­an, but Dav­is car­ried the con­gres­sion­al dis­trict by 6 points in the race against Brown­back.” (Topeka Cap­it­al-Journ­al)

“Dav­is had been widely dis­cussed as a po­ten­tial gubernat­ori­al can­did­ate in 2018 after an un­suc­cess­ful at­tempt to oust” Brown­back. “He said he will spend the next two months trav­el­ing the dis­trict. He ex­pects to make a form­al an­nounce­ment in the sum­mer.” (Wichita Eagle)
