Grassroots Group Endorses Gillespie

Northam has built loyalty in the party through campaigning for down-ballot candidates.

March 22, 2017, 11:22 a.m.

“The Middle Resolution, a leading conservative, grassroots organization, announced its endorsement of Ed Gillespie for Virginia governor on Tuesday via Facebook Live.” (release)

RECORD TIME. Former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie (R) at a recent campaign stop “didn’t take a hard position on [President] Trump’s proposed cuts. But the longtime D.C. operative said there are miles to go before a federal budget is finalized, and that he will be talking with Virginia’s members of Congress as the legislative body reworks the president’s spending plan.”

“During his trip, Gillespie promised to back legislation expanding charter schools.” (Hampton Roads Daily Press)

LESSON IN LOYALTY. Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D) “has made some 180 appearances over the past couple of years on behalf of other state and local candidates, from senators to county supervisors, and often in districts where Democrats were unlikely to win.”

Northam: “There’s a lot of loyalty toward our party and what I’ve done. … I think they realize what I’ve meant for the party and how hard I’ve worked for our values. We see it as a significant advantage.”

Former Rep. Tom Perriello (D) “has been on the road since the first of the year, circling the state in a Jeep Grand Cherokee and hitting some 41 counties or cities so far. He has packed town hall meetings and seen huge turnout for online events; when snow canceled a rally this week in Williamsburg, a last-minute Facebook Live event drew 7,000 viewers during the hour it was taking place.”

Former U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra (D), who ran against Northam for lieutenant governor in 2013, isn’t endorsing a candidate. Fairfax Supervisor and 2014 VA-10 nominee John Foust (D) is backing Northam. (Washington Post)

FACT CHECK ON AISLE 3. “An altered Facebook headline on a newspaper story involving a statue of Robert E. Lee has blown up into a major sore point in the Virginia GOP primary for governor. … A conservative nonprofit with ties to” Prince William County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart’s (R) “campaign aides — the Conservative Response Team — … posted and promoted a Facebook post linking to the article but with a fake headline: ‘Gillespie: I’m OK with Charlottesville Taking Down the General Lee Monument.’ The post makes it look as if that were the Washington Post’s headline. In fact, Gillespie has said he doesn’t support moving the statue and thinks local officials who approved moving it should be voted out of office.” (AP)

'BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the special counsel’s office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony are not accurate,' said Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller."
