Former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie (R) and Lt. Gov. Ral­ph Northam (D) re­main the best-known can­did­ates in their re­spect­ive primar­ies and con­sequently lead early bal­lot tests in a new Chris­toph­er New­port Uni­versity poll (Jan. 15-28; 1,002 RVs; +/-3.2%).

Fa­vor­able/un­fa­vor­able rat­ings:
Gillespie: 20-10%
Northam: 16-7%
Former Rep. Tom Per­ri­ello (D): 11-8%
Prince Wil­li­am County Su­per­visors Chair­man Corey Stew­art (R): 7-8%
State Sen. Frank Wag­n­er (R): 9-5%

Bal­lot test among Demo­crats (464 Demo­crat­ic RVs; 4.8%)
Northam: 26%
Per­ri­ello: 15%

Bal­lot test among Re­pub­lic­ans (418 Re­pub­lic­an RVs; +/-5%)
Gillespie: 33%
