Democrats Signal Interest in Open Seat

Lujan Grisham will run for governor in 2018.

Five Demo­crats said Wed­nes­day they would con­sider a bid for the seat Rep. Michelle Lu­jan Grisham (D) is va­cat­ing next cycle to run gov­ernor: state Sen. Jac­ob Can­delaria, Berna­lillo County Com­mis­sion­er Mag­gie Hart Stebbins, state Rep. Javi­er Martínez and Al­buquerque city coun­cilors Pat Dav­is and Ken Sanc­hez.

On the GOP side, Lt. Gov. John Sanc­hez (R) said “some key Re­pub­lic­ans” are en­cour­aging him to enter the race. (Al­buquerque Journ­al)

Also mulling a bid is Terry Brun­ner (D), a former aide to Sen. Jeff Binga­man (D). State Demo­crat­ic Party Chair­wo­man Deb Haa­land (D) said she wouldn’t rule out a run. Berna­lillo County As­sessor Tan­ya Gid­dings (D), state Sen­ate Ma­jor­ity Whip Mi­chael Pa­dilla (D) are also pos­sible can­did­ates. (New Mex­ico Polit­ic­al Re­port)

The dis­trict leans Demo­crat­ic and voted for Pres­id­ent Obama by 15 points in 2012.
