How seriously has the bridge-lane-closure scandal affected Chris Christie’s 2016 presidential prospects?

DEMOCRATS (89 VOTES)

Very seriously: 57%
Somewhat seriously: 37%
Hardly at all: 6%
Not at all: 0%

Very seriously

“Regardless of whether he knew, he doesn’t look presidential.”

“It will linger and remain the defining moment of his persona, replacing [Hurricane] Sandy. How’s that for a switch in fortunes?”

“GW Bridge is tip of the iceberg. Titanic, anyone?”

“It reinforces that power-hungry, overbearing-bully image that Americans find distasteful and do not want to have to live with for four years.”

Somewhat seriously

“If another shoe drops, it’s over.”

“It will all blow over if there really are no fingerprints.”

“Aside from the health and safety concerns that the closure raised, this issue is potent and potentially damaging because it is relatable. It is not an obscure financial dealing that most voters can’t follow. Everyone understands the charge here, and everyone will have an opinion on it.”

Hardly at all

“Way overblown. He is a contender. The most it did was embolden his potential rivals.”

How seriously has the bridge-lane-closure scandal affected Chris Christie’s 2016 presidential prospects?

REPUBLICANS (90 VOTES)

Very seriously: 21%
Somewhat seriously: 51%
Hardly at all: 27%
Not at all: 1%

Very seriously

“If he is lying, his nomination battle is over.”

“The scandal undermines Christie’s biggest asset: Plainspoken truth-teller.”

USA Today headlined the quote: ‘I am not a bully.’ Positively Nixonian.”

Somewhat seriously

“Lots of time, but it does buttress his biggest problem: the Tony Soprano sound-alike issue.”

“Being a complete jerk never helps.”

“He can recover, but there’s blood in the water.”

“The bigger problem is that East Coast doesn’t go over well in New Hampshire or Iowa. Ask Rudy.”

“Anytime there are political investigative entities with subpoena power examining your every move, it is serious.”

Hardly at all

“National media is blowing this way out of proportion. There’s no corruption here, just petty politics by staff, not Christie.”

“Time heals all wounds.”

"President Donald Trump would not insist on including repeal of an Obama-era health insurance mandate in a bill intended to enact the biggest overhaul of the tax code since the 1980s, a senior White House aide said on Sunday. The version of tax legislation put forward by Senate Republican leaders would remove a requirement in former President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law that taxes Americans who decline to buy health insurance."

"Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence officer who wrote the explosive dossier alleging ties between Donald Trump and Russia," says in a new book by The Guardian's Luke Harding that "Trump's land and hotel deals with Russians needed to be examined. ... Steele did not go into further detail, Harding said, but seemed to be referring to a 2008 home sale to the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev. Richard Dearlove, who headed the UK foreign-intelligence unit MI6 between 1999 and 2004, said in April that Trump borrowed money from Russia for his business during the 2008 financial crisis."
