Patriot Majority USA has sent out mail ads criticizing former Randolph Mayor Tom MacArthur (R) as “just another tax-raising, big-spending politician” and former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan (R) for being “just too extreme for New Jersey.” The Democratic group has spent $110,000 on mail, Web, and TV ads in the Republican primary so far. MacArthur spokesman Chris Russell said the ads were meant to help Lonegan because he is a weaker candidate. “I think Republican primary voters are going to see through it,” he said. “We know and they know that if Tom wins the primary he’s going to be very difficult to beat in November, and they know if (Democrats) get Lonegan, they get the candidate they want.” (Newark Star-Ledger)

LOCALS CALL PRIMARY ONE OF NASTIEST IN STATE’S HISTORY. The race between MacArthur and Lonegan is one of the most bitter in recent memory, according to locals. “It will rank up there with the nastiest campaigns the state has seen,” said Monmouth University pollster Patrick Murray. “I can’t say I’ve seen one this high-profile that has gotten this nasty this quickly.” Murray said Lonegan needs to expand his base in order to come from behind and win, but his mostly negative tactics could depress turnout and keep voters from supporting him.
