Cantor to Resign, Asks for Special Election on Election Day

Rep. Eric Can­tor (R) said he will resign on Aug. 18 and has asked Gov. Terry McAul­iffe (D) to call a spe­cial elec­tion on Nov. 4 so that the win­ner will be in of­fice dur­ing the lame-duck ses­sion at the end of the year. Eco­nom­ics pro­fess­or Dave Brat (R) is the fa­vor­ite over as­so­ci­ate pro­fess­or Jack Tram­mell (D) in the heav­ily Re­pub­lic­an dis­trict. (Rich­mond Times-Dis­patch)
