Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a telephone conversation with President Obama that he will skip next week’s G-8 economic summit, the White House said on Wednesday.
Putin cited “his responsibilities to finalize Cabinet appointments in the new Russian government” as reason for declining the invitation to join international leaders to discuss how to revive the sputtering global economy, the White House said. Putin said he will be sending Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in his place to the summit at Camp David later this month.
Putin was officially sworn in for a third term as Russia’s president on May 7.
