Obama Pledges Support for Japan

Uses education speech to reiterate sympathy after quake, tsunami, nuclear woes.

President Obama told an audience in Arlington, Va., on Monday that “the United States will continue to offer any assistance we can as Japan recovers from multiple disasters.”

The president was giving a speech on education at Kenmore Middle School but began his talk with brief remarks about the unfolding disaster in Japan, saying that he's "heartbroken" by images of the devastation from the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami. “I want to reiterate America’s support for the people of Japan, who are some of our closest friends and allies.”
