Daley's Departure a Sign of Trouble for White House? Carney Says No -- VIDEO

At the White House briefing on Tuesday, press secretary Jay Carney deflected questions about the surprise departure of William Daley, chief of staff.

"While it was, as the president said, a surprise that Bill decided that this was the right time for him to go back to Chicago, a town he loves dearly," Carney said, "and while this was a surprise for the president, the fact is, it is because he has somebody like Jack Lew who can step right in and fulfill the chief of staff’s role that we will not miss a beat here in the West Wing."

When asked if the change should be seen as an indication of internal troubles for the Obama administration, Carney said that he thinks the transition to Lew will be "exceptionally smooth and seamless."
