CLICHé WATCH: Obama Dining with Tech Royalty

Tonight, President Obama will host a private dinner with Eric Schmidt, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and a smattering of other Silicon Valley luminaries. What interesting topics will the Ruling Overnerds discuss? "The meeting is a part of our ongoing dialogue with the business community on how we can work together to win the future, strengthen our economy, support entrepreneurship, increase our exports and get the American people back to work," stated a White House release.Surely, the minds behind Google, Facebook and Apple are meeting with the President of the United States for more reasons than "winning the future" (although, naturally, that's a fairly important topic). Let's take a look at a longer version of the White House release: "The meeting is a part of our ongoing dialogue with the business community on how we can work together to win the future, strengthen our economy, support entrepreneurship, increase our exports and get the American people back to work... The president and the business leaders will discuss our shared goal of promoting American innovation and discuss his commitment to new investments in research and development, education and clean energy."In other words? This meeting--which the White House emphasized is not a fundraiser--may just help shore up potential donors for Barack Obama's reelection efforts, raise the profiles of every other CEO on the list, and provide the President with a quintessential "I'm doing all I can to innovate" moment by conferring with the most notable names in American industry. And if Silicon Valley types just happen to decide to donate to Obama's reelection campaign later, the White House wouldn't mind.

The seven cities that did not lose tech jobs during 2009 included Oklahoma City, which added the most tech jobs in 2009 with 900, according to the 2010 Cyberciti...

Tech Groups Eye ‘Future Of Internet’ Hearing Tuesday

The Senate Commerce Committee will hear from a variety of Internet stakeholders on Tuesday at a wide-ranging hearing expected to touch on the push for “network neutrality” legislation, the emergence of new Web-based enterprises, as well as the need for greater bandwidth and capacity as more users come online around the globe. Staffers for Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who chairs the Interstate Commerce, Trade and Tourism Subcommittee, are planning the hearing. Dorgan and Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, introduced legislation last year that would bar broadband providers from blocking, degrading or prioritizing content and applications on their networks. National Cable and Telecommunications Association President Kyle McSlarrow; Writers Guild of America-West President Patric Verrone; Stanford University professor and Internet expert Lawrence Lessig; Christian Coalition spokeswoman Michelle Combs; Robert Hahn, executive director of the Center for Regulatory and Market Studies, American Enterprise Institute; and actress Justine Bateman are slated to testify. McSlarrow is expected to highlight cable companies’ leadership in developing a robust broadband platform that is available to 92 percent of U.S. households, according to an industry source. If cable operators had not invested more than $100 billion to build and upgrade their networks to launch residential broadband service, “the YouTubes of the world would not even exist,” the official said.

H-1B Visas to Have Their Day in Committee

The tech community will have its first chance Tuesday to weigh in, carefully, on major immigration legislation being debated in the Senate. The influential lobbying force that has for years scrambled for access to highly skilled foreign workers must now carry out a rough balancing act: making sure lawmakers know that the bill, as written, does not work for it, but that it doesn’t want to kill the process, either.

Key Tech Players Aid Obama Transition Behind The Scenes

When President-elect Obama's transition team recently named two respected academics with strong ties to a prominent advocacy group to review changes at the FCC, the announcement appeared designed to signal that the public-interest sector would play a larger role in shaping high-tech policy than under the Bush administration.

Tech CEOs Want Action On R&D Credit Before Congress Leaves

High-Tech, Telecom Stakeholders Brace For Antitrust Turn

High-tech, telecommunications and media companies can expect increased antitrust scrutiny in President-elect Obama's administration after eight years of what some believe has been a hands-off approach to marketplace competition within the Justice Department, the FCC and to some extent the FTC. The Democratic Illinois senator made ensuring competitive markets part of his campaign platform, which stated the United States needs "a business and regulatory landscape in which entrepreneurs and small businesses can thrive, start-ups can launch, and all enterprises can compete effectively while investors and consumers are protected against bad actors that cross the line."

Patent Court Case Gets Scrutiny From High-Tech Groups

High-tech groups and experts are closely following a key case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit that addresses a type of patent aimed at disclosing and claiming new methods of doing business. Court watchers say the case before the 12-judge panel could reach the Supreme Court and should be monitored closely by policymakers. An attorney representing advocates of a technology-neutral U.S. patent system argued before the court Thursday that limiting types of patentable innovations would defy historic practice and congressional intent. Judicial scrutiny around the paradigm for "business method" patents comes on the heels of a high-profile push on Capitol Hill to make sweeping changes to the nation's patent regime. That bill, however, has languished and is unlikely to pass this year.

Ahead Of Holidays, Tech Groups Produce Wish Lists For Obama Administration

As Inauguration Day nears, the high-tech sector is submitting its wish lists to President-elect Obama's transition team through letters, one-pagers, and face-to-face meetings. On the front burner is an array of technology-related government incentives that industry groups want included in the economic stimulus package that lawmakers plan to unveil early next year. Last week, the heads of the American Electronics Association and the Information Technology Association of America, which expect to close a merger deal by the end of 2008, wrote to Obama's advisers and members of Congress urging that technology be included in the stimulus bill. The action comes as telecommunications industry interests are campaigning for billions of federal dollars.

For years, the phrase "immigration reform" meant two things for Republicans: a contest to see who could be toughest on the 11 million people living in the United States who aren't supposed to be, and a flood of proposals to fortify the nation's borders. For Democrats, it meant something else.

Report: Battle Over Coveted Obama Technology

President Obama's team has been lauded for the campaign they ran in their nearly-4-point victory over Mitt Romney last year, and no aspect of the campaign has received more praise than Team Obama's use of technology. As Sasha Issenberg chronicled in a three-part series for MIT Technology Review, the sophistication with which the Obama campaign applied digital, data and analytics far surpassed Romney's operation and offered a blueprint for campaigns -- both Democratic and Republican -- for years to come. But, according to a report in The Verge, a divide has developed among those who helped develop the Obama campaign's digital operation.

Despite emotional arguments from both inside and out of Silicon Valley that the tech world's meritocracy obsession comes with the best intentions, there are increasing calls from actual female and minority start-up employees inside the bubble who suggest very much the opposite — that outsiders are kept out, and on purpose, under the guise of inclusiveness.
