TIMELINE: Presidential Visits—U.S. & China

Since President Nixon's historic trip to China in 1972—the first ever for a sitting president—visits by leaders of the two countries have become more frequent. President George W. Bush went to China four times during his presidency and President Obama went to China before his first year in office was over. The current visit by China's President
Hu Jintao marks the ninth visit to the United States by a
Chinese head of state.
