Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan tried to temper the expectations for the first presidential debate during his appearance on Fox News Sunday.
It’s a debate that pundits have said Mitt Romney needs to dominate if he wants to cut into President Obama’s growing lead in key battleground states.
“Look, President Obama is a very -- he's a very gifted speaker,” Ryan said. “The man's been on the national stage for many years, he's an experienced debater, he's done these kinds of debates before. This is Mitt's first time on this kind of a stage.”
Instead, Ryan tried to paint the metrics for evaluating the debate as a choice between the two candidates and their different visions for the country: pro-growth versus stagnation, as Ryan characterized it.
“We owe the country a very clear choice of a different future. We can either have a dynamic, growing economy that produces opportunity, or we can have a stagnant economy that fosters dependency. We can stick with the failed policies of the four - last years for the next four years – or we can get a brighter future. Stagnation versus growth, dependency versus opportunity and upward mobility. That’s the classic choice, the clear difference that we're offering.”
