David Axelrod (Richard A. Bloom)

Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod said on Sunday that it could be past midnight before the country knows who the next president will be, but he said the Romney campaign was nonetheless in “deep trouble.”

Although Axelrod said that if Ohio or Virginia results come in earlier, the country is likely to know who won, he admitted it could be a long night on Tuesday.

“It could extend past midnight into the morning,” he said on Fox News Sunday, adding that “We’re willing to wait a few more hours to know.”

Axelrod sounded confident with President Obama’s chances in some key battleground states. “They understand that they're in deep trouble,” he said. “They’re behind and not catching up at this point.”
