The Senate Ethics Committee today announced the appointment of a special counsel in its inquiry of Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., related to his affair with a former aide, the wife of his close friend and adviser. The appointment of the special counsel, Carol Bruce, who will help decide if Ensign broke federal law and Senate rules, signals the ethics probe is gaining steam despite the end of a federal probe into Ensign's action. The Ethics Committee has wide ability to fault members for actions that reflect badly on the body.
