Generation Opportunity, the coalition of right-leaning groups that put out a rapey Uncle Sam video last month, has outdone itself. This month the group is out with an ad suggesting that if you don't sign up for Obamacare, Uncle Sam will show up at your house on Halloween and kill you.
The ad, for your consideration:
The reality is quite the opposite. One of the chief reasons young women go bankrupt or die is if they skip an annual pap exam and fail to pick up on early warnings of cervical cancer. The group had been targeting college kids around the country, encouraging them to "opt out" of coverage.
This ad is actually an improvement over their previous ad, which I wrote about in September, in as much as it encourages young people to find another plan. "Don't get scared into signing up for Obamacare," the final screen reads. "You have options; get the insurance that's right for you."
That's better than their last ad, which made no mention of signing up for an alternative plan. Generation Opportunities David Pasch claims it isn't a change of heart. "That has been our message from day one," he told National Journal in an email. "We've never encouraged young people to forgo health insurance entirely. It's always been Opt Out and buy private."
Trouble is, most people don't get past "Opt Out."
