Matthew Dowd

Matthew Dowd writes a biweekly column for National Journal's website and publications. Dowd is a founding partner of ViaNovo, an international communications and brand positioning firm. He is also an ABC News political analyst and provides commentary for major news programs such as This Week and Good Morning America. Dowd has written a number of commentary pieces for The New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and Huffington Post. He was the co-author of the New York Times bestseller Applebee's America: How Successful Political,Business, and Religious Leaders Connect with the New American Community.

Dowd served as chief strategist for the successful re-election campaigns of President George W. Bush and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Prior to his work for President Bush, he worked for 25 years for Democratic candidates around the country. Dowd has not worked for either political party since 2006 and considers himself an independent.
