George Zimmerman is in custody in Florida and will face a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the Associated Press reports.

In Florida, the second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. It is typically charged when a fight or other confrontation results in death and where there is no premeditated plan to kill, according to the AP.
