Report: FBI to Investigate Whether News Corp. Was Involved in Phone Hacking

The FBI will investigate whether Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., already in legal and political trouble in Great Britain, was involved in hacking into the phone lines of September 11 victims, according to news reports.

The investigation, opened after Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., requested one, will try to determine whether News Corp. workers illegally accessed or tried to access private phone calls, messages or records, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

King wasn't the only member of Congress to call for an investigation into Murdoch's news company, which shuttered the News of the World in Great Britain on Sunday and withdrew from an attempt to acquire broadcasting giant BSkyB after similar allegations of phone hacking in the United Kingdom.
