Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid characterized relations with Senate Republicans as “obstructionism on steroids” and said he expects Senate Democrats to do well in this year’s election.

The Nevada Democrat had harsh words for Republicans, saying that the tea party is leading the GOP “right over the cliff.”

"This Congress isn't over,” he said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “All I ask is for Republicans to understand what legislation is all about. It's the art of compromise and building a consensus."

Reid went on to support President Obama’s quartet of recess appointments last week, and expressed confidence that they would withstand legal scrutiny. He also said his party is doing well protecting its majority in this year’s elections, and had kind words for former Senator Bob Kerrey, who is mulling a run in Nebraska, where Sen. Ben Nelson is retiring.

"Bob Kerrey is one of the most interesting, dynamic, heroic people I've ever served with,” Reid said. “We have a lot of good Democratic prospects. We have Massachusetts. We have North Dakota. We've got Arizona. We've got Nevada. We're doing just fine with prospects. Kerrey would certainly add to that."
