 Last Call!

WHAT'S NEWS . . . Thursday . . . 4/17/2008 . . . 4 pm

  • In NC, Barack Obama "mimed brushing dirt off his shoulders" as he told a crowd Hillary Clinton was "in her element" during the debate. He also "hedged" on whether there will be a NC debate (NBC/National Journal).

  • In an interview to air tonight on "Money & Politics," John McCain said "you could make an argument that there's been great progress economically" over the past seven years (Bloomberg release).

  • Obama and HRC have sent out "dueling" mailers in PA targeting each other on trade and worker issues ("The Page").

  • On a conf. call, HRC's advisers "struggled with questions" about what she thought of her husband's Weather Underground pardons ("Political Ticker").

  • In a "symbolic victory," HRC picked up the endorsement of the Univ. of PA's Daily Pennsylvanian ("The Swamp"). Meanwhile, undecided superdelegate/Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA) said he'll remain neutral "until the last primary" (The Hill).

BY THE NUMBERS . . .

"I'm an active three-hole puncher. My world revolves around punching holes in things" -- McCain mgr. Rick Davis, who "often does his own collating" (Time).

WE HEAR . . .

  • "We asked tough but appropriate questions" -- ABC's George Stephanopoulos, sticking by his debate performance (Politico.com).

  • "You heard what he said about Hillary? That's what the people who know her think" -- Bill Clinton, asking the voters to trust Ted Danson's judgment (NBC/National Journal).

  • "Let's stop and shake hands here" -- British PM Gordon Brown to McCain, giving us a glimpse of how their meeting went ("The Page").

  • "There's a uniqueness in the relationship. That's not to say we can't have other friends; we do" -- Pres. Bush, on how he and Brown are allowed to see other people (Last Call! watching).

  • "I would like to know what part of our lax immigration policy is considered violent" -- Tom Tancredo, picking a fight with the pope ("The Sleuth").

HEADS UP . . .

  • DC United tailgate (RFK Stadium, 5 pm).

  • Toots and the Maytals (State Theatre, 7 pm).

  • Dude Fest, with a "Big Lebowski" screening and live music (Arlington Cinema 'N' Drafthouse, 8 pm).

  • Autechre (Black Cat, 8 pm).

  • Beware on the Metro, it's "Poem In Your Pocket Day."

HOTLINE TV

Everyone's got an opinion on Hotline TV.

SWIZZLE STICKS

  • Recounting her meeting with Brown to reporters today, HRC gave a completely accurate version of events.

  • We're still shaken up by last night's revelation that Katie Couric may not be the worst of all possible debate moderators.

  • So apparently, Obama will wear a flag pin if a veteran gives him one. What if, one day, 37 veterans give him flag pins?

  • Does anyone else suspect Obama's touring PA by train just for the remote possibility of getting to save a white, rural, blue-collar Jewish guy tied to the tracks?

  • We've concluded it's better to just not know about all the post-event parties in this town, so we don't feel quite so bad when we don't get invited.

  • What's wrong with this picture in today's Last Call! Cell Phone Pic of the Day? Keep them coming.

  • Baltimore hosted 13 major party conventions in the 19th Century, more than any other city.

  • The winner is Sue Walitsky, and here's her Swizzle Challenge: "George W. Bush threw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals' home opener this year. Who threw out the first pitch at the Baltimore Orioles' home opener in 1954? Who had the honors in 1991? Why are these years so memorable for Orioles fans?" The 3rd correct e-mailer gets to submit the next question.

???OVERSERVED???

Tacky papal souvenirs and their aficionados.
