Idaho is one of the most Republican states in national politics. George W. Bush and Bob Dole carried it easily; in 1992 Bill Clinton only narrowly beat out Ross Perot for second place, 28%-27%. It was Bush's third best state in both 2000 and 2004. Idaho saw John Kerry, on his visit to Sun Valley, and Dick Cheney, at a Boise fundraiser, in 2004, but not the president. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in his July 2003 speech to Congress, said that he would like to visit people in Idaho, and Senator Larry Craig complained to Bush that Blair would get there before he did; Bush promised to visit in 2005. Interestingly, Kerry raised almost as much money in Idaho as Bush, most of it from Sun Valley and Boise liberals.

Since 1988, Idaho's presidential primary has been held in late May and has been little noticed elsewhere.

Bush (R) 409,235 (68%)
Kerry (D) 181,098 (30%)

2004 Democratic Primary
