Presidential Politics And Election Returns

For district profiles and additional information on the elected officials of Utah, please use the pull-down menu above.

Utah has been the most Republican state in five of the last seven presidential elections. Arguably it was in 2000 as well. The percentage of votes for George W. Bush, 67%, was slightly behind that in Wyoming and Idaho. But the Bush margin of 40.49% over Al Gore was larger than in either of those two other states. As far back as 1960, Richard Nixon carried Utah with 55% of the vote; in 1972 he won with 68%. Ronald Reagan won 73% here in 1980 and 75% in 1984; George Bush won 66% here in 1988 and George W. Bush 67% in 2000. In 1992, this was also the least Democratic state: Ross Perot finished ahead of Bill Clinton, 27% to 25%.

Governor Mike Leavitt spent much time and effort promoting a Western regional primary for the Friday following Southern Super Tuesday, March 10, 2000. But only Colorado and Wyoming (with a caucus, not a primary) adopted the date, and candidates paid little attention to western issues as Leavitt had hoped. Bill Bradley and John McCain pulled out of their races before March 10, and only 10% of Utah's registered voters bothered to vote.
