Presidential Politics And Election Returns
Last Updated July 14, 2003

For district profiles and additional information on the elected officials of Tennessee, please use the pull-down menu above.

Tennessee has been about evenly divided in presidential politics at several different points in the last half-century, even as its basic political leanings have switched from Democratic to Republican. It was close in the Eisenhower-Stevenson races in the 1950s, in the Carter-Reagan race of 1980 and again in 1992, 1996 and 2000. But the fact that native son Al Gore was unable to win here as the representative of the incumbent party in a time of peace and prosperity suggests that Tennessee is likely to be out of reach for presidential Democrats in the near future.

Tennessee's presidential primary has been held on Super Tuesday (though Tennessee holds its state primaries on Thursdays, the only state to do so). But it is far from the biggest state to vote that day, and so receives relatively little attention from presidential candidates.

2000 Presidential Vote
Bush (R) 1,061,949 (51%)
Gore (D) 981,720 (47%)
Nader (Green) 19,781 (1%)
Other 12,731 (1%)
2000 Republican Primary
Bush (R) 193,166 (77%)
McCain (R) 36,436 (15%)
Keyes (R) 16,916 (7%)
Other 4,273 (2%)
2000 Democratic Primary
Gore (D) 198,264 (92%)
Bradley (D) 11,323 (5%)
Other 5,616 (3%)
1996 Presidential Vote
Clinton (D) 909,146 (48%)
Dole (R) 863,530 (46%)
Perot (I) 105,918 (6%)
