For district profiles and additional information on the elected officials of Nevada, please use the pull-down menu above.

In the 1940s, Nevada was a Democratic state; in the 1960s, it was divided much as the nation was, voting narrowly for John Kennedy in 1960 and Richard Nixon in 1968. In the 1980s, it was heavily Republican, twice giving more than 60% to Ronald Reagan and 59%-38% for George Bush in 1988. In the 1990s, it voted twice for Bill Clinton; critical to his margin was his pledge to veto bills moving nuclear waste to Yucca Mountain or temporary storage sites. But the basic Republican proclivity of the state produced a 50%-46% margin for George W. Bush, who promised only to block a temporary storage site. Nevada, like other Rocky Mountain states, received a big influx of white middle-aged Californians in the 1990s, an exodus that made California more Democratic and the Rocky Mountain states more Republican.

Nevada's late March presidential primary has attracted little attention; efforts to join a proposed Western states primary set for Friday, March 10, 2000, were defeated by Democrats in the Nevada House in June 1999.
