Presidential Politics And Election Returns
Last Updated July 14, 2003

For district profiles and additional information on the elected officials of Nebraska, please use the pull-down menu above.

Over the last 50 years, Nebraska has voted more Republican in presidential elections than any other state--61.0% to Utah's second-place 60.7%. It was appropriate, perhaps, that this was the last state Bill Clinton visited as president, in December 2000. Greater Omaha usually goes Republican, while Lincoln is more closely divided; rural western counties are heavily Republican--Bush's percentages there ranged up to 86%. In the VNS exit poll, no statistically significant demographic group came close to voting for Al Gore. Nebraska law allows its electoral votes to be split, with one going to the winner of each congressional district and two to the statewide winner. This has never made any difference; in 2000 the closest district was the 2d, which Bush carried 57%-39%.

Nebraska has a presidential primary in May that once attracted attention; the whole national press followed Robert Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy out here in 1968 and took note when Frank Church won in 1976. No more, though: Nominations are now sewn up long before May, and Nebraska votes as unnoticed then as in November.
