Montana, with its 3 electoral votes, doesn't see much of presidential candidates. Its presidential primary is in early June, far too late to affect any results. But in 1992 and 1996 Montana was closely divided, as Ross Perot got some of his highest percentages here--26% in 1992 and 13.6% in 1996, his second best showing that year, just under Maine's 14.2% for his best showing. Almost all those votes seem to have gone for Bush in 2000, as he carried the state by a wider margin than Ronald Reagan or Richard Nixon in the Republican landslide years of 1984 and 1972.
