Presidential Politics And Election Returns
Last Updated July 25, 2003

For district profiles and additional information on the elected officials of Mississippi, please use the pull-down menu above.

Mississippi voted 58%-41% for George W. Bush in 2000--almost the same as the 60%-39% margin by which his father carried the state in 1988. There is no way of avoiding the conclusion that this is a racially polarized electorate: Whites voted 82%-17% for Bush, blacks 96%-3% for Gore. Yet it should also be said that few Mississippi whites yearn for a return of racial segregation; they line up with Republicans on a whole raft of other issues--defense, crime, cultural attitudes, taxes--just as most blacks line up with Democrats on the same issues. Mississippi holds a presidential primary on Southern Super Tuesday; in 2000 both parties' contests were effectively over.

2000 Presidential Vote
Bush (R) 572,844 (58%)
Gore (D) 404,614 (41%)
Nader (Green) 8,122 (1%)
Other 8,604 (1%)
2000 Republican Primary
Bush (R) 101,042 (88%)
Keyes (R) 6,478 (6%)
McCain (R) 6,263 (5%)
2000 Democratic Primary
Gore (D) 79,408 (90%)
Bradley (D) 7,621 (9%)
1996 Presidential Vote
Dole (R) 439,833 (49%)
Clinton (D) 394,020 (44%)
Perot (I) 52,221 (6%)
