Except for 1964, when it narrowly favored Lyndon Johnson over Barry Goldwater, Kansas has voted Republican for president throughout the last 60 years. It was also one of Ross Perot's best states in 1992. In 2000 George W. Bush carried 103 of its 105 counties, losing only those containing the old industrial city of Kansas City and the university town of Lawrence. Things are only likely to get better for national Republicans. Kansans under 30 voted 68%-28% for Bush according to the VNS exit poll.

In 1996 and 2000 the state legislature voted to cancel the April presidential primary; if Kansans want a look at presidential candidates, they are well advised to look up into the sky as they jet over on their way to more marginal states.

2000 Presidential Vote
Bush (R) 622,332 (58%)
Gore (D) 399,276 (37%)
Nader (Green) 36,086 (3%)
Other 14,522 (1%)
1996 Presidential Vote
Dole (R) 583,245 (54%)
Clinton (D) 387,659 (36%)
Perot (I) 92,639 (9%)
