Indiana has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. It has been close, though not suspenseful, only in 1976, when Gerald Ford beat Jimmy Carter here by 53%-46%, and in 1996, when Bob Dole beat Bill Clinton 47%-42%. In 2000, George W. Bush won 57%-41%; he lost only 6 of 92 counties and--a bad sign for Democrats--carried voters under 30 by 64%-34%. So Indiana sees little of presidential candidates in election year autumns. Nor does it see much of them in spring or summer: Indiana's May presidential primary has not been influential since 1968. Only if Evan Bayh is on the Democratic ticket is Indiana likely to be seriously contested in 2004.
