Idaho is one of the most Republican states in national politics. George W. Bush and Bob Dole carried it easily; in 1992 Bill Clinton only narrowly beat out Ross Perot for second place, 28%-27%. From 1988-96, Idaho's presidential primary was held in late May, but was not binding for Democrats, who select their presidential nominee in the early March caucus. Idaho considered joining other Rocky Mountain states voting in an early March 2000 primary, but the state House voted it down in March 1999.
