Presidential Politics And Election Returns
Last Updated July 8, 2003

For district profiles and additional information on the elected officials of Arkansas, please use the pull-down menu above.

Arkansas voted 53% for Bill Clinton in 1992 and 54% in 1996; these were his best and eighth-best percentages those years. In 2000, it voted only 46% for Al Gore, his 29th-best state. George W. Bush, who targeted the state and appeared in Northwest Arkansas on election eve, won 51% here, his lowest percentage in the South except of course for Florida. But with Clinton out of office and out of state, Arkansas seems unlikely to be a target state for a Democrat, except for one with special appeal in the South.

The Arkansas presidential primary, held in May, attracts little attention; nor did it in 1992 when it was held on Super Tuesday. There is no party registration requirement and Republican turnout has typically been very low; 85% of those voting in the May 2000 primary voted Democratic.

2000 Presidential Vote
Bush (R) 472,940 (51%)
Gore (D) 422,768 (46%)

Other 12,652 (1%)
2000 Republican Primary

2000 Democratic Primary

LaRouche (D) 53,150 (22%)
1996 Presidential Vote
Clinton (D) 475,171 (54%)
Dole (R) 325,416 (37%)
Perot (I) 69,884 (8%)
Other 13,791 (2%)
