Presidential Politics And Election Returns

Alabama is one of the most Republican states in presidential elections. In 2000, Alabama whites voted 73%-25% for George W. Bush and Alabama blacks voted 91%-8% for Al Gore; Gore's best county in the nation was one of the nation's poorest, heavily black Macon County, where he won 86% of the vote. As head of the Alabama Democratic Conference Joe Reed has said, "Blacks are the base of the Democratic Party"; blacks sometimes cast most of the votes in Democratic primaries. But overall the state went 56%-42% for Bush.

Alabama's presidential primary is in June--too late to count for much. An attempt to change the date failed in 1999.
