Richard Just Joins Atlantic Media As Editor of National Journal Magazine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 25, 2014

RICHARD JUST JOINS ATLANTIC MEDIA AS EDITOR OF NATIONAL JOURNAL MAGAZINE

Just to Lead Magazine Redesign and Take Brand to Next Level

Washington, D.C. – National Journal Editor-in-Chief Tim Grieve announced today that Richard Just will be the new editor of National Journal magazine. Just joins National Journal on March 10 and will be based at its Washington headquarters.

Just was most recently with Newsweek, where he was Washington editor and then editor before the magazine began the transition to its new owners last fall. Before his time with Newsweek, he served as editor of The New Republic from late 2010 until mid-2012, a period during which he led the magazine to its first National Magazine Award nomination for general excellence in two decades.

"Richard is one of the best magazine editors in the business, and he comes to National Journal brimming with ideas for producing the most vibrant, most compelling, and most essential policy and politics magazine anywhere," Grieve said. "Bringing Richard on is part of an ongoing investment in our magazine, our members, and the future of long-form journalism in Washington—and it's just what we need to build on the tremendous success we're already having."

Having redesigned and relaunched its website in October, National Journal has since enjoyed significant audience growth, setting traffic records throughout the fall. January's online readership was up 45 percent over last January's.

Just will lead the magazine through a redesign this spring with Deputy Magazine Editor Andie Coller. He will also oversee the hiring of additional staff editors and reporters over the next several months.

"It's an exciting time to join National Journal given the opportunity and resources on hand to be bold and creative while maintaining the foundation on which this venerable brand was built nearly 50 years ago," Just said. "As we reengineer the magazine, our focus will be on making it a source for long-form writing about politics that is enlightening, challenging, informative, and (as all great magazine journalism should be) truly fun to read."
