Mitt Romney, who has sought to avoid the public spotlight since losing the presidential election and avoided the capital for Monday’s inauguration, is scheduled to be in Washington on Friday for a reception in honor of him and his wife, Ann.
Two major Romney campaign fundraisers, Virginia philanthropist Catherine Reynolds and hotel magnate Bill Marriott Jr., have invited guests to wear business attire to a luncheon at Washington’s J.W. Marriott Hotel. Reynolds’s office confirmed that the Romneys would be on hand. The event’s invitation is topped by a close-crop of an American flag painted on newsprint.
Romney rejoined Marriott International's board of directors after November’s election. He had served on the board twice before, the second stint ending in 2011 when he left to run for the White House.
Romney was the first nominee since Michael Dukakis in 1989 not to attend the inauguration. Aides said Romney chose to stay at his home in La Jolla, Calif.
