Reports: Christie Reconsidering?

Anonymous sources suggest N.J. governor will run; a friend tells local newspaper no

September 24, 2011

Several news reports today that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, in an abrupt about-face, may be reconsidering his oft-reiterated decision not to run for president. But the Newark Star-Ledger quotes Christie associates dismissing the reports as wishful thinking on the part of Republicans still searching for a standard-bearer.

No official statement from the governor's office was forthcoming in the face of a flurry of reports that he's rethinking his 2012 prospects.

“Huge pressure from high-ranking Republicans and fund-raisers” is making Christie consider the possibility, however, a source told the NewYork Post. “He’ll decide this week.”

Politico cited two sources that Christie is weighing a run, and NewsMax also reported Christie might run. One friend of the governor shrugged off the reports in an interview with the Star-Ledger. "Newsmax is wrong," Bill Palatucci, told the newspaper. "Quote me."

Christie, an outspoken governor whose 2009 election Republicans heralded as an early repudiation of President Obama, had—until now—denied that he would run.

Speaking at Rider University in New Jersey, Christie suggested the current field of candidates is not cutting it, NewsMax reported.

"I think what the country is thirsting for, more than anything else right now, is someone of stature and credibility to tell them that and say, 'Here's where I want us to go to deal with this crisis,'" Christie said.

Christie will make a decision within days, NewsMax reported.
