Report: Perry Had Experimental Stem Cell Procedure

Texas Gov. Rick Perry—widely viewed as a 2012 presidential contender—had back surgery last month that included stem cell therapy, the Texas Tribune reported.

The procedure did not involve embryonic stem cells. Perry and other conservatives—including his predecessor in the Texas governor's office, former President George W. Bush—oppose the medicinal use of embryonic stem cells.

The procedure, which involved the injection of his own stem cells, was not FDA-approved.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner called the procedure "successful."
