The Justice Department on Monday approved Florida's redistricting plans for congressional, state House, and state Senate districts, the Orlando Sentinel and other news organizations report.
In a one-page letter, Assistant U.S. Attorney General Thomas Perez wrote that Attorney General Eric Holder “does not interpose any objection to the specified changes” to the state’s proposed maps.
The new federal and state districts will likely give Florida Republicans an advantage in upcoming elections, but will also likely increase the number of Hispanics and African-Americans elected from the state to Congress and to the state legislature, according to the Sentinel.
