Priebus Says He Didn't Tell Trump to 'Shut Up'

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says he didn't tell Donald Trump and other birthers to "shut up" about President Obama's birth certificate.

Priebus was quoted in U.S. News and World Report on Wednesday as saying "I believe that the president was born in Hawaii" and adding, "I think that the entire issue gets me off track to what I really need to focus on, which is how to beat him [Obama]."

But as for telling birthers to zip it, Priebus begs to differ. The RNC chief posted on Twitter late Wednesday, “This isn't accurate ... I never said this. RT @usnews: GOP Boss Wants Trump to Shut up on Birther Claims.”

Trump has been making headlines with his repeated calls for Obama to prove he was born in the U.S. And his candidacy is surging -- he was tied for first among potential Republican presidential candidates in a recent CNN survey of GOP primary voters.
