The competition is on among the GOP's potential 2012 White House contenders to burnish tea party credentials.

One day before Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn.,  is set to star in the Tea Party Patriots’ “Continuing Revolution Rally” on Capitol Hill, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced Wednesday that he will headline the Greater Boston Tea Party’s tax day rally April 15.

Pawlenty is already slated to attend a Taxpayer Tea Party Rally in Concord, New Hampshire the same day alongside former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum—an opportunity for both likely White House contenders to woo tea party supporters in the first-in-the-nation primary state.

Both are playing catchup compared to movement favorites Bachmann, Sarah Palin, or the father-son presidential tag team, Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. Later in the month, Pawlenty and Santorum will join Bachmann and a handful of other contenders in Manchester for a presidential summit sponsored by the tea party-affiliated group Americans for Prosperity.

The tea party is one of the GOP's most active constituencies, but a new CNN/Opinion Research poll raises questions about whether associations with the movement might backfire for candidates in the general election. Released Wednesday, it showed that nearly half of all Americans view the movement unfavorably.

The poll was conducted by telephone between March 11 and 13 among 1,023 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
